John Heart Jackie

Portlandia friends John Heart Jackie are heading to San Diego this week, as part of their two week jaunt around the western half of the country. They recently recorded and debuted a song they wrote last time they were in San Diego, in town opening for The Tree Ring. Check out “Siren Song” and be sure to swing by this Thursday at 8pm. The Tree Ring’s own John Titterington will open the show with his project The Roofbeam Carpenters.

Goldcoast Longboards

Our buddies from Goldcoast Longboards swung by the house last month, bringing with them a slew of new completes and a small film crew. Neighbor and part-time shredder Joel P West came down to sample the goods (as captured above), while Goldcoast art director Dustin Ortiz took hot laps down Broadway. Check out a few more photos from the afternoon and Goldcoast’s stylish boards here.

The Shivers

Even for us, this seems to good to be true… The Shivers are playing our living room this Thursday! One of our favorite bands happened to have a day off in San Diego on their two week tour out from NYC. Come over at 8pm on Thursday for what promises to be an amazing evening.

Clea Minaker : Shadow & Light

We had such an inspiring time last month hosting Montreal-based artist Clea Minaker, along with Wes Bruce and MCASD’s Teen Art Council. After a week of non-stop scurrying above our heads, the attic hosted over 100 people for four separate performances on Friday, April 22nd. The production was curated by Clea, but fully performed by the teens who were really stellar, especially the live soundtrack provided by Nacho. Relive the magical evening through one of Nacho’s songs below, and download the full EP here. Photo by Michael Allen Spear, view more from the performance here.

David Bazan : Living Room Tour 2011

I had heard about David Bazan‘s house tours for a couple years, and for some reason always shied away from hosting or attending one. Something about paying a $20 cover, or not being able to let your friends come over if they didn’t get tickets in time. Well needless to say, we were finally convinced to play host, and boy are we glad that we did. Mr. Bazan has got to be one of the nicest dudes in the industry. Beyond transfixing all of us with his extremely thoughtful songs and amazing voice, he bothered to answer probably 100 questions and then stick around to sign posters for everyone in attendance. Chadwick Gantes snuck in last minute and snapped the above photo and the below video. Hopefully David won’t mind that he wasn’t on the paid guest list.

Dogcatcher w/ The Paddle Boat (solo)

Indie-jazz trio Dogcatcher will make travel down the coast this weekend from Mountain View, California.  Following an afternoon set during Little Italy’s art walk they’ll make their way over to Habitat for a stripped-down evening performance supported by Jeremy from The Paddle Boat.  Stream / Download Dogcatcher’s debut album KILR on bandcamp, and come by the house this Sunday at 8pm. It’s also Jackson’s birthday!

The Donkeys : Listening Party

On April 26th Dead Oceans will release the third full length record from San Diego’s favorite sons, The Donkeys. Born With Stripes kicks off with the mega-jam “Don’t Know Who We Are” which you can preview below. To celebrate the release we’ll be hosting a listening party with The Donkeys in attendance next Tuesday (the 26th). Cruise over around 8pm, and bring $15 large because the boys will have some fresh vinyl ready to sell. If you can’t make the listening party, be sure to make it out for their record release show on Saturday, April 30th at Sushi Art with The Tree Ring.

Merchandising

Ever since this logo was conceived, we’ve envisioned printing it on a couple tees and hoodies, at least just for ourselves and our friends. We finally got around to burning the screen last week, and the results were solid. We’ll be making a small run (just under 50) of shirts, which will be available starting at the performances on the 21st and the 22nd of this month. If you’d like to get your hands on one, drop us a line here: info@habitathouse.org, or swing by Make Good in South Park or Material in North Park.
